President Biden Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza
NEW YORK – In his final address at the United Nations General Assembly, President Joe Biden addressed the dire situation in Gaza, describing the conditions for innocent civilians as nothing short of hellish. He urged both Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire to prevent further escalation, particularly cautioning against the potential for a full-scale war in Lebanon.
Biden emphasized the necessity of diplomatic efforts to alleviate rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, urging both parties to finalize a ceasefire and negotiate terms regarding hostages—a proposal that has garnered support from the U.N. Security Council.
With nearly 100 hostages still believed to be in Hamas's custody, Biden stated that securing a ceasefire is a top priority for the White House. He also reiterated the U.S. commitment to Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.
His address comes at a critical moment, with various global crises demanding urgent attention. Notably, the U.S. stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has diverged from the majority of the General Assembly, which recently passed a resolution calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories—an action opposed by the U.S.
As Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip continue, the toll has reached 41,431 Palestinians killed and 95,818 injured. Despite a UN resolution for a ceasefire, Israel's offensive persists, resulting in the displacement of nearly the entire population.
